What is Covered California?

Covered California is the California health insurance exchange where individuals can obtain brand-name health insurance under Obama Care. It is the only place to get federal premium assistance to help people buy affordable health insurance. This means individuals may qualify for a discount on a health plan through Covered California.

Covered California offers comprehensive health insurance coverage to eligible individuals and families in California. Covered California offers state healthcare administration and assistance, including an online health marketplace like ACA Health Insurance Marketplace.

4 Coverage Levels

Covered California offers four levels of coverage: Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum. In addition to those four levels, a minimum coverage plan is available to those who are younger than 30 or can provide certification that they are without affordable coverage or are experiencing hardship.

Essential Benefits

All health insurance plans provide comprehensive coverages and services, known as essential health benefits. These benefits include services like prescription drugs, mental health, hospitalization, maternity, and emergency services. Pediatric services also include dental and vision care.

Dental Coverage

All health insurance plans offer embedded pediatric dental coverage. This means that dental insurance for children is included in the price of all health plans purchased in the exchange. In addition, Covered California now offers supplemental dental coverage for adults, through optional family dental plans.

Vision Coverage

Covered California offers a pathway to quality vision care. Vision care benefits for children are included in all health plans purchased through the exchange. Vision care for adults is not offered but Covered California works with certain vision insurance companies to offer vision coverage directly to consumers.

Residency

You must be a resident of California to qualify for Covered California. It is designed to serve individuals and families in the state. If you are not a resident of California, you are not eligible for a Covered California plan

Immigration Status

You must qualify as a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawfully present immigrant. Eligible immigrants include lawful permanent residents (green card holders), refugees, asylees, and valid US Visa holders.

Income

Income must fall within certain limits to qualify for financial assistance. Covered California offers subsidies to help lower-income individuals afford health insurance. Income limits depend on family size and the federal poverty level.

No Dual Coverage

In most cases, you cannot be eligible for other types of minimum essential coverage, such as employer-sponsored insurance, or government-sponsored health insurance plans such as Medicare, or Medi-Cal in California.
